Many dragstrips follow NHRA rules which require Snell rated SA2020 or M2020 helmets for cars that run the quarter mile in 13.99 seconds or less. Most Teslas are easily capable of this so having a helmet is mandatory for pretty much all teslas (I have not seen any Tesla run slower than 13.5 or so).
SA2020 helmets can get pretty expensive, and deals and sales on brand name equipment such as Simpson Racing are few and far between. I have opted to go with Snell M2020 rated Motorcycle helmets since some can be had at a significant discount. My latest helmet is a Shoei, and it won’t be my last. It’s small, light, and fits very comfortably. I did opt to get the thinner cheekpads for the perfect fit. Here is an example of a great deal on an M2020 Shoei Helmet online at Motorcyclegear.com for $359 (MSRP $589):
Careful with motorcycle helmets that have extended aero on the back of the helmet because it might end up being uncomfortable when seated with the headrest. This Scorpion EXO-R420 has too much aero for my comfort:
