Many people choose to upgrade their teslas with aftermarket wheels. There are many reasons to do so. In fact a set of lightweight wheels can help your Tesla achieve the following:
- Increase range.
- Increase responsiveness of steering input. Meaning your car will move in the density direction quicker with less weight to move.
- Personalization beyond the stock Tesla offerings.
With such benefits is understandable that some swap out the stock wheels with aftermarket. If you choose to do this just make sure you hang on to your stock wheels. There are a couple of reasons for this:
- Tesla is known for not performing alignments on cars with aftermarket wheels. This is especially troublesome with air suspension models like the model x, model s, and cybertruck. If the alignment is not done following the exact Tesla procedure the car can go into limp mode and throw all kinds of errors. It can fix itself after some time however it is dangerous to drive with all the errors. You may even lose regen completely as it happened in my model x.
- They may choose to not service your car, even warranty work could be voided with aftermarket wheels. To play it safe throw on the stock wheels before taking it into service and you will experience less problems.
- You can use the stock set for all season or winter tires. Then you can put performance summer tires on your new aftermarket wheels and achieve maximum levels of performance.
It really isn’t worth it to sell your original Tesla wheels given the negative outcomes associated with trying to get any service down by the Tesla service center when rolling in with aftermarket wheels. Be safe out there!
